Safety
Our customers know that we are the tree safety pros. If you have a question about a tree, we are available to give you our opinion. Here are some frequently asked tree removal questions for those who are wondering if they should hire a tree expert.
1. Q: What kind of trees can I remove myself?
A: A general guideline for DIY tree removal is if you need a latter or not. If you need a latter to remove limbs, then you should consult a local tree specialist for their assistance. If you do not need a latter, you are most likely able to do it yourself. Be cognizant of where you stand while cutting limbs, (especially with a chainsaw) the last thing you want is to incur an injury and rack up medical charges. Hiring a tree removal team would cost much less.
2. Q: If the tree is small enough for me to do, what is the easiest way for me to remove it?
A: First and foremost, make sure you have the proper safety equipment. (gloves, eye protection, ear protection if you use a chainsaw) It is highly encouraged to seek the advice of an arboriculturist before undertaking this task. Making sure the tree is watered and moisturized the day before. This will help the surrounding soil to soften and make uprooting easier. Next, dig around the tree’s roots (usually they spread as wide as the tree’s canopy) and use a source of leverage to remove the root ball. The tree can then be either transplanted if all roots are intact, or it can be sawed into smaller pieces and disposed. Again, consulting a qualified tree authority is highly encouraged.
3. Q: What if I am cutting it down and not uprooting the tree?
A: Follow the same steps, stopping after moisturizing the soil. Before any sort of cutting begins, analyze which way the tree will fall and secure the area that it will land on. Ensure that you have a safe place to stand when the tree falls over. Cut into the tree downward at a steep angle until you have cut about a quarter of the way into the tree’s diameter (the direction that you make the cut is the direction you want the tree to fall). Then, from the other side, cut in horizontally until you meet the slanted cut on the other side. Stand back in a safe place while the tree falls. Next, the stump can be removed by following the steps in question 2 by digging around the root and removing the root ball. Another way of removing the stump is to hire a wood chipping team or rent one from your local hardware store. If you have any complications, always reach out to your local subject matter expert.
